A group of students from the Department of Diplomacy and Public Relations at the University of Human Development (UHD) organised an event on International Mother Language Day on 21st February 2023. The theme of the event was ‘Mother language is our identity’.
The event was sponsored by Civil Development Organisation (CDO), Youth Focus Organisation and Youth Guide Organisation (YGO).
At the event, two specialists in the Kurdish language, Prof. Dr Shilan Omar Hussein and Mr Jamal Habibullah Bedar, delivered speeches about the need for preserving and developing the Kurdish language and identified the responsibility of the government, educational institutions and civil society groups to promote Kurdish. They also talked about the threats that Kurdish faces from globalisation and unorganised local media.
Following this panel, two poets namely Ms Gulzar Hamafaraj and Mr Muhammad Nadim read poems expressing the richness of Kurdish but also recognising the impediments to its development. There were also music and other entertainment.
Another side of the event was an exhibition opened for local handmade crafters to present their items.
The number of participants turned out to be high, and several news channels and media outlets covered the event.
