A group of students of the Department of Diplomacy and Public Relations at the University of Human Development (UHD) marked International Childhood Cancer Day, on February 15th, with an event at Hiwa Hospital.
Hiwa Hospital is in Sulaymaniyah city. It is the largest cancer hospital in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The event was held for children with cancer at the hospital. It involved playing music and chanting songs, gifts to the children and flowers to their parents and to the doctors and nurses. It was also a call for donations to the hospital. Sulaimani Children Music Band, guided by their instructor Mr Muwafaq Luhoni, played the music.
The event was financially sponsored by entrepreneur Mr Mariwan Haji Jamal.
International Childhood Cancer Day is remembered worldwide to raise awareness about childhood cancer and support children with cancer.
Speaking to the media, the manager of Hiwa Hospital said that childhood cancer is a global problem and like many other countries it is increasing in Kurdistan. He called for more preventative measures to be taken at all levels.
Event Management is one of the modules students in Year 3 of the Diplomacy and Public Relations Department study. One of the requirements of the module is to organise an event outside the university.
