The English Department at the University of Human Development organised a panel for its graduates to share their stories with current students about jobs and their post-graduation experiences. The event took place in the Seminar Hall on November 13. The panel aimed to motivate undergraduates to work harder and remain hopeful about their futures. It also sought to provide guidance on how to pursue a career once they graduate.
The panel moderator, Araz Ahmed Muhammed, graduated from UHD in 2012 and is currently a lecturer in the English Department. He introduced the speakers who were all UHD alumni and asked them to share their stories about the jobs they found after their graduation.
The first speaker was Hallo Abdullah Hamza. He is currently a PhD student at Cyprus International University and an English teacher at Sulaimani Polytechnic University. He focused on learning English and said that it has helped him significantly and given him the confidence to pursue postgraduate education. He mentioned that because of his English skills, he found it easy to communicate with students from other countries and make friends.
Mr Hamza teaches English to support his education abroad. He was grateful for his tutor and mentor at UHD, Dr Rauf Kareen Penjweni, who was the dean of the College of Languages when Hamza was a student.
The second speaker was Meer Adil Jamal. He encouraged the students to join clubs and peer groups at their university because, according to him, these would help them find employment and settle easily upon graduation. He advised them to be more committed to the tasks and assignments given by their tutors.
Jwana Aziz Saleh was another alumnus who spoke on the panel. She now teaches English at the British International School in Sulaymaniyah. Reflecting on her journey of learning English, she highlighted how immersing herself in the English language and literature has broadened and strengthened her communication skills. Jwana emphasised the importance of building relationships and networking with individuals in various job sectors and stated that this had not only offered her guidance and support but also opened doors to internships, research projects, and job opportunities.
Questions and comments from the audience enriched the event.
