UHD Department of Law lecturer Dr Asos Namiq Brakhas contributed to a course with a presentation on the issue of minor marriage (child marriage) in Kurdish society. The course was organised by Investigator Organisation for the Rule of Law. Minor marriage is an increasing problem in Kurdish society, and one way to fight it is through raising awareness of school girls and boys (secondary and high schools).

In a lengthy talk to participants of the course, which was run on the 9th-10th of September, Asos Brakhas shed light on the problem and highlighted its legal and social consequences. She referred to some court cases and family disputes that happened recently and made suggestions on how to encounter them. She also explained why the marriage of minors should not happen and why/how some courts occasionally allow it.

Participants, who were largely teachers from public and private schools in the city of Sulaymaniyah, agreed at the end of the course that there should be plans and awareness programmes at schools to help overcome the problem.
