English Dept students discuss 'Tuesdays with Morrie' from different angles
2024-05-15
Students of Semester 6 in the Department of
English Language at the University of Human Development gathered to discuss the
1997 book Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man and Life's Greatest
Lesson as part of a class activity on 6th March 2024. The
general theme of the book is about the hardships that the main character Morrie
Schwartz goes through and the anecdotes that he offers to surpass the emotional
and physical obstacles that one might be confronted with at any moment in their
lives. Lecturer Araz Ahmed Muhammed talked about
some key themes of the book such as universal truths, priorities, inevitability
of suffering, purposefulness and responsibility, and cultural, religious, and
societal challenges. Students then took turns to express their views about the
book. Kashma Awat presented some insights about
Mitch Albom as an internationally renowned and best-selling author, journalist,
screenwriter, playwright, radio and television broadcaster and musician. Parwa Ahmed focused on some major maxims in
the book such as: live for today like you’re dying tomorrow, work for tomorrow
like you’re living forever; once you learn how to die you will learn how to
live; don't cling to things because everything is impermanent. She also
discussed the importance of spiritual security and family relations. Sherin Ahmed, another student, concentrated
on the idea of love as the only rational act, learning to forgive yourself and
others and the significance of perceiving life as a series of missteps and
challenges. The audience
enriched the event with questions and comments.
