Law Students visit Sulaimani Correctional Facility
2025-12-29
Students of Year 5 in the Department of Law at the University of Human Development visited the Correctional Facility for Women and Children in Sulaymaniyah on 23 December 2025, as part of their annual field trips to various government facilities, such as the parliament, the court, and the prisons. The aim is to obtain further knowledge about law-making, law implementation, and the role of the court in settling disputes, punishing, and correcting wrongdoers.
Students were transported by bus from the UHD campus to the facility and back.
The Sulaimani Correctional Facility is administered by the General Directorate of Social Reform under the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Unlike ‘correctional facilities’ in common law countries, where young offenders under 18 await their trials, the Kurdistan version is a type of detention centre where women and young offenders do their time.
Dr Asos Namiq Brakhas, a lecturer in the Law Department, supervised the visit. She worked with the prison management to introduce the workings of the prison to students, the services that are provided to the detainees, and the procedures that are followed when someone receives a sentence and is due to serve their time.
The Law Department at the University of Human Development arranges field trips for its students, stemming from its belief in the benefits of practical classes in terms of increasing knowledge and enhancing future career opportunities for them.
