Manuscripts and Cultural Heritage Unit holds workshop on Saladin Ayyubi

The Manuscript and Cultural Heritage Unit at the University of Human Development (UHD) held a special panel on Saladin Ayyubi on 30th May 2024, titled ‘Saladin Ayyubi, writing history and reproducing history’.

At the onset of the panel, Professor Dr Mariwan Ahmed Rasheed, UHD President, delivered a speech in which he welcomed the attendees, who were prominent scholars attended the panel on special invitation, and stated that Saladin as a great Kurdish leader of the Islamic nation in his time deserves research and intensive studies. He referred to the present panel and hoped that it would lead to further academic activity about the topic.

The subsequent scholars delivered presentations at the panel: Prof. Dr Ferset Merei Ismail from University of Zakho, Prof. Dr Hakeem Ahmed Mam-Bakir from Salahaddin University, Asst Prof. Dr Hardi Mahdi Mika, director of Kurdistan Centre for Documentation and Academic Research at Sulaimani University and director of Manuscripts and Cultural Heritage Unit at University of Human Development, and Dr Yaseen Taha, lecturer at Sulaimani University.

The speakers looked at Saladin Ayyubi’s life and his glorious achievements as the political and military leader of the Muslims from various perspectives and pointed to the views of several orientalists. They agreed that there is a need for more analysis and understanding of Saladin and also learning from him by policymakers.

Following coffee break and rest, the quests returned to the hall for comments and questions. The panellists came up with a list of recommendations for researchers and academics, clarifying what should be done and what steps be taken in the future.
