College of Health Sciences at the University of Human Development (UHD) organised a seminar to raise awareness about the increasing health problems of diabetes. It was held on World Diabetes Day on Sunday, November 14th, 2021. The seminar 'How to protect yourself from diabetes' was delivered by Dr Redwan Jaza who is a lecturer at the College of Medicine at the University of Sulaimani and a specialist in diabetes and heart diseases. The seminar was moderated by Evan Abdulkarim, assistant lecturer at the College of Health Sciences. In the seminar, Dr Redwan focused on the symptoms of diabetes mellitus and steps to reducing its prevalence. He said that diabetes mellitus is now a growing problem, and the number of diabetic patients worldwide is expected to double by the year 2045. Hence, international health organisations, such as the World Health Organisation, and experts in the field recommend people to protect themselves from the disease by following methods such as cutting on sugar, reducing the consumption of foods and drinks that contain a high volume of carbohydrates, doing sport, losing weight if the person is overweight, and giving up smoking.
