The College of Science and Technology at the University of Human Development (UHD) hosted a panel discussion featuring two of its lecturers, Dr Mazen Ismail and Assistant Lecturer Karwan Muhammed, titled ‘Data Protection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Is It a Myth or Reality?’. The event took place at the Professor Dr Ali Qaradaghi Hall on 22 October 2026.
The panel addressed several pressing issues, including:
• Common misunderstandings: highlighting that data leaks often stem from improper storage by employees rather than external hackers.
• Legal frameworks: addressing the lack of specific legislation to tackle modern data issues, noting that Iraqi courts currently rely on outdated laws to settle disputes.
• Cybersecurity vulnerabilities: discussing the technological inability and lack of expertise required to protect computers and electronic systems from attacks and unauthorised access.
The panellists noted that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly seen as a threat to privacy, as well as to personal and sensitive data not intended for the public. However, they emphasised that recognising these threats and developing the capacity to confront them ultimately places society in a stronger position to protect its information.
The event concluded with an interactive session of questions and comments from the audience.
