2026-05-12
The College of Nursing at the University of Human Development commemorates International Nurses Day, May 12, by convening an academic panel featuring four specialists in nursing and medicine. It was held under the motto: Serve with devotion and treat with science, in Professor Dr Ali Qaradaghi Hall. The speakers on the panel were Hiwa Siddiq Sadiq, MSc in Nursing Science and registered nurse at Harem Private Hospital; Dr Omer Hussain Sharif, lecturer at the College of Nursing at the University of Sulaimani; Dr Bayan Omer Sharif, PhD in Adult Nursing, Health Development, and Training Centre; and Dr Bushra Jabbar, Head of the Nursing Department at the University of Human Development.
The panel discussed various aspects of nurses' roles in the health sector, their rights and responsibilities, and aimed to increase awareness among the public regarding the significant work that nurses do for the well-being of patients and their overall contribution to the health of society.
Among the issues that were focused on were the hard work that nurses do and the challenges they face in the workplace. The advice given by a panellist was that students in the nursing department must prepare themselves very well for the difficult tasks and make the utmost use of the available facilities. Another issue was the necessity of cooperation between the university nursing departments and the public and private hospitals to allow students to practice their knowledge and gain experience. This is generally lacking in the Kurdistan Region, as pointed out by one panellist, and urgent work must be done in that regard.
The UHD College of Nursing involved some of its students in another activity on the same day, which was offering free tests - diabetes, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. A significant number of students, lecturers, and university employees benefited from the service.
