Statement of Protest by the presidents of private universities
2025-11-20
The private universities are formal establishments in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. They make a significant contribution to the development of science and knowledge; they follow international standards in their curricula and teaching methods, and they have proud graduates who serve in different sectors, helping their country and people.
Some of the private universities have achieved high positions in renowned international ranking systems, and their graduate study for Master's and PhD degrees at reputable universities abroad is commendable. Students from these universities participate in international competitions held in areas of science and technology, where they secure top placements.
The private universities are home to locally and internationally renowned scholars who work and invest their time, benefiting students and developing the institutions. Students at private universities are equipped with all the necessary tools to become leaders in their fields, aiding themselves and their fellow citizens with employment and career opportunities.
It is unfortunate that recently, in a TV debate, Dr Sarwar Abdulrahman compared private universities to 'markets'. We consider this defamation. Therefore, he will have four days to apologise on the same TV channel; otherwise, we will take legal action.
